Japanese Clones of the 40's, 50's, and 60's

Shortly after W.W.II, Japan, with money from the United States, manufactured a large number of sewing machines. The most common of these were based on the Singer Model 15 but there are also Singer 99 clones. Indeed many of these machines are practically indistinguishable from a Singer and use parts that are interchangeable. Often they were given American sounding names to appeal to the overseas market. Over 5000 different "brands" have been identified, manufactured by 15 or so companies. Unfortunately, records from these manufactures don't exist, so it is impossible to identify them further. Generally speaking, a machine will, somewhere, state "made in Japan" or have "JA- " stamped into the bottom of the machine. To further complicate matters, large retailers would purchase machines and have the company name on them: RH Macy, Gimbals, etc. Any retailer so inclined could have Sewing Machines made just for him or her (Sears Kenmore, Wards Signature). I've tracked Department Stores, Machines with Automobile names, female names, patriotic names etc. The post war machines are generally well made, often quieter and smoother running than the Singers they were copied from! Japan also gave us many of our colored sewing machines. Examples have been found in metallic blue, green, pink, yellow, and I have a Fire Engine Red one! In terms of collectability, don't be fooled by a claim of "an extremely rare" Mitsubishi, Ford, Saxon, Stitch Queen etc., the same machine could have dozens of different names. If it says "Singer" on the machine, it probably is. If it doesn't, it's not. The Japanese machines have not caught on with collectors (even the ones made in Occupied Japan) and as a result retain very little value. They can be found at many thrift shops for $10-$20 and at local auctions for under $5. This might be a good niche for a collector on a limited budget – they could collect all pink machines or one machine of each color.

Ed: we recently purchased a vintage sewing machine, the gold plate on the front says Los Angeles Deluxe made in occupied Japan. That is the only identifier other than the serial number think it looks a lot like a Pfaff 130. It has a single hole bobbin. I need to find parts for it. In particular the screw holding holding the bobbin winder assembly to the body. The assembly was off when purchased, and the oiling screw was too short. I tried to replace it with a regular screw with no luck. I've yet to find a screw either metric or imperial that works. Any suggestions?

Unknown said...

It shouldn't be hard. If you are near any place that actually repairs sewing machines (vice sending them out for repair) they should have screws in their parts bin that would work. If the oiling screw (?) is the correct diameter and thread, just not long enough, carry that with you and tell them you need one just like it but longer. Another possibility is a gunsmith - I think some of the screws used on sewing machines are also used on guns. -Ed

Hello Ed...I have had a vintage sewing machine that I had inherited from my now deceased grandmother who taught me how to sew when I was a little girl and would now like to use it to teach my own three daughters. My issuse as I see a lot of people have is finding instructions. It has a couple plates on it..one being Brant, another being 650 De Luxe Precision and another as Dynamic model 73, it seems to operate great but the foot wont lift im not sure how to get it to engage to do so...its sitting at my kitchen table in its heavy blue case as my daughter wishes she can just sew something...any suggestions on where or how to get operating instructions?

Such a helpful blog. I have read almost the entire thing. Phew.
I have a 15 class Japanese clone Precision Home Mark machine. Downloaded several different comparable manuals with success. It is a machine my father in law used and holds sentimental value. It runs great. My husband and I would like to spruce it up and sew with it for a long time. I have been looking for parts and found belts, wiring for the generic 15 class HA 1 machines. I am having trouble finding a motor. Are the parts fairly interchangeable? Have not figured out exactly what model Singer it replicates. Maybe the 15-30. Can I even use parts from a Singer? Any known websites that sell parts for this machine?
Thanks very much for any help.
Sara

Hi Ed! I just got my husband's grandmother's BelAir 990 Automatic Zigzag. I got the threading and bobbin winding down but when it actually comes to the sewing it either jams or the thread breaks If I'm lucky enough to get past thus point it won't actually stitch anything. Any thoughts as to what may be going on? Thanks!

I have just acquired a Modern Home sewing machine. Made in Japan by the Precision Sewing Machine Distributor. Stamped on the machine is SN 56-26933. I think its a knock off of a Singer 15-90. It has a knob to lower the feed dogs located near the base of the machine under the forward/reverse lever on the plate bed (sorry if my terminology is bad). How can I find out if it is a clone of a 15-90? It is missing the bobbin case & needs lots cleaning/oiling, new belts & new plug but is not frozen solid & slight rust. thank you

Unknown said...

Angie, the mechanics in your machine are more likely 15-30 copies. If you send me photos of your electrical connector and bobbin case area to my gmail address OldSewingMachines, I can probably fix you up with replacements. -Ed

Hello Ed! We ran across your post about the clone machines and I am wondering if I have one. I have a Brother (antique) machine (made in Japan) with gold embroidering around the whole machine. It also has a big "infinity" symbol on the front and all over the rest of the body. The side has a silver plate with unfamiliar markings. The most questionable part is, almost everything has a "Brother" stamp on it.I have yet to have seen another and wonder what I am looking at. Have any ideas?

Ed- I have the opportunity to purchase a 7 Jewel Automatic Zig Zag sewing machine, teal in color. Not finding much info about it. Do you know if this machine would have a JA or JC # on it?

Thanks! Camille

It sounds like a Japanese machine but the only way to tell is to look under the machine. Even knowing the name doesn't tell because several Japanese manufacturers used the same badge. I don't know how many different "Dressmaker" or "Seamstress" machines were made but you can find them with JA numbers from different manufacturers. -Ed

Unknown said...

Yaro, I am afraid I can't help much with your Viscount. The Yahoo Vintage Japan Sewing Machines Group has been compiling a list of JA and JC numbers with the hope of tying badged names to manufacturers but JA12 was not even on the list yet so I can't tell you who made your machine. - Ed

My husband brought home a vintage machine. Royal De Luxe made in Japan with a Universal motor made in USA. The number 55202 is stamped on it. I cannot tell if all the pieces are there or not as the bobbin case looks like something is missing. I am unable to find a photo of this machine online. The machine needs a belt but otherwise operates well. Are you familiar with this machine, is there a manual I could obtain, and do you know of anyone that works on such machines in the Nashville TN area? I like the machine and would enjoy using it. Thank you.

I have my grandmother's Winthrop Twin Needle Super ZigZag she bought and used in her bridal shop in New Jersey. It was passed to my mother and them me. It has served me well. It has been running beautifully since the 2940's. I have it serviced only as the timing needs it. I oil it myself. I couldn't sew on anything else as well.

Hi Ed, I recently picked up a Nelco SZA 221, This was my X's and she had it since the 1970's. It had been sitting in a house for several years. When powered the light came on but when I used the foot pedal the motor only grunted a bit. I cleaned and oiled the machine and now everything seems to be working.. My concern is that when I removed the top plate the and rotated the Stitch selector 2 the nylon or plastic gear which regulates the sizing is cracked in several places and I could tell that very soon it would probably break..I cleaned the fractured areas and gently placed some epoxy -JB clear weld to hopefully keep thing together for a while at least.. I guess i will put some thick lube on it after it sets or perhaps wrap in nylon tape?. is there a place to buy a replacement gear or is there a better way to attempt to repair? Thanks, JB

Hi. I just got a vintage sewing machine, which the family I bough it from says it is from the 50's. The brand name painted and engraved on it is Rover. The lady said it is from Germany. On the machine is written the Rover Sewing Machine Co. The machine also has a picture of an eagle, holding a swastika emblem. Is this a Japanese clone or was there really a company called Rover Sewing Machine Co manufactured in Germany? and what does the eagle and symbol mean? Is it from nazi germany??

Would you be able to confirm if the Ocean Sewing Machine Co. Ltd. is a Japanese clone manufacturing company or were they located in the U.S.?

In 2008 I bought a Mercury Dial-o-Matic, Model R3L, serial # TA131404, from a thrift shop for $20. I have tried finding out more about it but since I've read your blog I realize I'm not likely to get any information. I did find out that it was manufactured in Utsunomiya, Japan around 1956.

It's a beautiful machine with bright decals and an intricate faceplate. It sews great and is fairly quiet. I use it for piecing my quilt blocks.

My friend has a Toyota treadle machine. Yes, it says Toyota. Lovely soft green color in a lovely cabinet, it's as close to MINT as I've ever seen and I deal in antique treadles. This is from the 40's, and she has found a reference about the Marshall Plan after the war. This is the only one I have ever seen or even heard of. I contacted Toyota for her but, although they heard of it, they have no info. It has the manual, attachments and all with it. Anyone elae heard of it?

Were any of the post-WWII models treadles, or all electric? A customer came to my shop looking for information on her mother's machine. It's a treadle Mitsubishi, purchased by her mother while her father was stationed in Japan.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

In 1956 my Dad purchased a "Streamlined Super Deluxe Sewing Machine" designed by Sokolec and made in Japan. It is encased in furniture with the pedal on the side to be used by the right knee. I used it more than Mom and continued to use it until this mother's day when my husband bought me a computerized Viking. Because it still works and my sentimentality for it, I don't want to throw it away. Is anyone interested in these machines because of their vintage? Are they considered antiques?
Are they buyable for their parts? Do you have any suggestions for me?
Thank you. Vicky

Hello Ed, my grandmother left me a fantastic 'Mercedes' handcrank sewing machine. I have no doubt it's a 15 clone (based on looks, condition and name) but I wonder why there is nowhere on the machine any reference that it is made in Japan. There us no serial, nothing underneath, no numbers painted, stamped or anything. Could Mercedes have anything to do with it, like they want to keep their name up so no reference to made in Japan?

Hello, Ed. What a great blog! Shortly after we were married in 1960 my wife bought a machine (new) with the name 'WHITE' superimposed over a triangle, and a plate stating: "Made in Japan especially for the White Sewing Machine Corporation". On the very bottom of the machine (after I lifted it up) is stamped FZ 903 3060. At the time we had very little money, so my wife made all of her maternity clothes and things like a cover for a couch, ad infinitum. She died almost nine years ago, so it hasn't been used since then and for who knows how many prior years, but has been stored well and seems to be in mint condition. My daughter wants to use the machine, but alas and alack I have no manual. Do you think it is worth putting any money into? Thank you very much.

Well, I've read these comments and noticed some patterns. I am not here to ascertain resale value, nor seeking a manual. I'm not here looking for "more information" to avoid my own exhaustive investment of time, and I must say...you are a patient dude. Thank you for treating the masses kindly.
I sent you a few pictures to the address listed in these comments a few minutes ago...hoping against hope you could help identify a set of cams I received in a large lot of accessories from eBay for my 403a. Initially I figured they would be easy to pinpoint because cams are so identifiable by the well known manufacturers. I listed them free to good home in a few vintage groups on Facebook and noone knew what they were. So, rather than give up and toss them im 100+ hours into my hunt online and I believe I have located two pics showing they are from an early Emdeko zigzag precision machine, before the cams came in bright colors. Am I on a goose chase or what?
Hate to throw them away ...know anyone I can mail them to?

Unknown said...

There are so many Japanese machines made by so many different manufacturers that without some kind of markings on the cams to identify them, it will really be a coincidence if you match them up with a machine. Suggest you join the Yahoo Vintage Japan Sewing Machine Group and pose your question there. At this writing, there are 3185 members in that group, one of them should be able to help. -Ed

Hi, we purchased an Imperial Model 164, with a JA36 number on it. At first I was looking for a manual and havnt had much luck. I have found other similar manuals though but thats not my question. This model came in a hide-a-way sewing cabinet and were having trouble with the wiring. Originally, there was a plug that the motor and light were plugged into but on side of the plug didnt work. My hubby tried changing out the plug with a regular house hold plug and box. Now when we turn on the machine the light works but if you start to sew, it dims and goes out but turns on once the sewing machine stops. Do you have any ideas? This is supposed to be for a friend but we dont want to give it away until it works well.
