She did pretty good for a beginning vintage SM collector - a Singer 99k handcrank she picked up in Scotland, a Singer 500 Rocketeer, A Singer 503 Rocketeer and - my favorite - a Necchi Supernova Ultra. Most collectors start with Japanese clones and work their way up to the Rocketeers and Supernovas but Jane didn't waste time, she started right at the top.
I let them sit overnight because I had some boat curtains to finish and I just couldn't decide which one to start on. Today, with a clearer head, I put the 500 on the bench because that looked like the one needing the most work. It has two of the three most common ailments afflicting the slant-needle singers, a broken hinge on the nose door and a broken bobbin winder spring. The third is frozen cam selectors.
Next, I plan to swap out tension assemblies and possibly motors. The motor runs okay but is a bit noisier than I like. I haven't yet tried sewing on it, I am letting the new oil soak in tonight and will continue tomorrow. More to come....
I picked up a Necchi Dial-a-Stitch, I think it is Model 250. It's a pretty green color and it weighs 40 pounds! I can't find any information about it. Do you have any information about that model? I just love reading your blog!

I just picked up a 500A and the same thing... the pin is missing from the upper hinge. Can I just get a small metal dowel and use that to replace the pin? The faceplate is fine.
ReplyDeleteEven easier than that - I have used a finishing nail of the correct diameter to replace the hinge pin. -Ed
ReplyDeleteI have a 403 with a broken cam clip spring. I wonder if the cam clip spring in the 500 will fit a 403. Do you think they're interchangeable?
ReplyDeleteYes, they are the same part number. I have parted out several slant needle machines if you can't find one locally. Ed
ReplyDeleteDo you know the difference between the hinged top for the 500a and the 503? They are different part numbers but the one I have doesn't have a number on it ( at least that I can find) Thanks Valerie
